Video and music... has the net killed it?Sales of CD music are down... yet digital online sales are up? Why is that? Simply put, the traditional method of music marketing is dying, well, more or less dead, actually. Why bother going to a music store to buy an over-priced CD when you can get the same thing from the internet? While it's true that most music on the web is pirated (only 1 in 20 music downloads are legal according to a recent survey), this will ultimately change. Why? Because people want cheap, fast, access to music. While pirating will always be an option for those that choose to not pay, increasingly it will become the norm for the average consumer to purchase music - legally - online. The reason is simple enough, it will become much easier to purchase your favourite music online, with a high speed download and no complicaitons, than it will be to pirate music illegaly. Times are a changin'. The old media means of music distribution is on it's way out. Currently, the music companies are doing their best to fight this, after all, that's their age-old business model. In the future, music will be shared between artists and consumers much more directly. |
